Burnley vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Minute Commentary
90' TOTTENHAM DEFEAT BURNLEY
There goes the full time whistle. It ends Burnley 0-2 Tottenham at Turf Moor.
90' INTO THE FINAL MINUTE
Just seconds left now and the Tottenham fans are loving it - they have claimed a massive win at a very difficult ground despite being well below their best.
90' FOUR ADDED MINUTES
We are one minute into four added on at the end of this match.
89' CHELSEA STILL LOSING
This one is done and dusted as we enter the final minute of normal time, so most Spurs fans will be eager to see how Chelsea finish up at Stamford Bridge - they are still a goal behind to lowly Crystal Palace.
87' AWAY FANS IN FINE VOICE
In the lively atmosphere at Turf Moor, it is now the visiting fans who are mkaing all the noise, as they celebrate their side reducing the gap at the top of the Premier League (potentially) and extending the distance to the teams below them.
85' INCHES WIDE AGAIN
His team are about to claim a huge win, but you sense Dele Alli will not be completely satisfied today. The former MK Dons man has another chance to get his name on the scoresheet as Son finds him space ten yards out, but after committing Ben Mee to the ground, Alli sends his shot wide of the far corner when he really should have been making it 3-0.
83' HARSH ON BURNLEY
It was hard enough at 1-0, but now that second goal has gone in, Burnley are completely devoid of any fight. The scoreline is harsh on the hosts, but in the end it very much looks like Tottenham's extra quality has won out.
81' JUST WIDE
Spurs are enjoying themselves now and Dele Alli is inches away from getting in on the act as he curls an effort narrowly wide of the far post from the edge of the area on the left.
79' BURNLEY 0-2 TOTTENHAM
Seconds after Dele Alli lost his temper with Son for not squaring to him from a decent position, the youngster shows him how it is done with a precise cross across the box following a counter, allowing the substitute to tap home and seal the victory for the visitors. A very well worked goal.
77' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Game over. Substitute Heung-Min Son has wrapped the victory up for Tottenham with just over ten minutes left.
75' INTO THE LAST QUARTER
Fifteen minutes remain at Turf Moor and Burnley are starting to give this a real go now, with Scott Arfield twice firing narrowly over from the edge of the box. This should be a very tense and exciting end to this game.
73' SON COMING ON
Vincent Janssen, who has worked hard but not really cut the mustard so far today, is replaced by Heung-Min Son as Tottenham look to protect this precious lead.
71' GAP AT THE TOP NARROWS
Chelsea are still losing at home to Crystal Palace and that means that Eric Dier's goal here sees Tottenham reduce the gap to the league leaders to just seven points and with the fixtures the Blues still have to come this season, is the dream still on for Spurs?
69' BURNLEY 0-1 TOTTENHAM
It had been coming and in the end it is poor defending from Burnley, but Tottenham won't care about that. A corner from the left causes havoc in the hosts' area and they simply can't clear it, with the ball eventually falling for Eric Dier on the penalty spot, who has all the time in the world to steady himself and laser a volley into the top corner.
68' GOOOAAALL!!!
What a massive goal this could prove to be! Eric Dier gives Tottenham the lead from close range at Turf Moor!
66' NEARLY AN OWN GOAL
Nearly a horrible moment for Joey Barton here as Burnley start to go into backs to the wall mode. A deep cross from Trippier isn't cleared and when it is guided back into the mix, a desperate lunge from Barton sees him head the ball inches wide of his own near post. Phew.
64' BIG CHANCES MISSED
In the context of this match, that is a huge chance. Janssen bustles his way into the area and is eventually crowded out, but the ball falls nicely for Sissoko ten yards out on the angle, but he rushes his shot and it flies well wide of the near post. One of those days so far for Spurs.
62' PRESSURE BUILDING
A succession of corners for Burnley to try and defend as the pressure continues to steadily build from Tottenham, but Christian Eriksen's delivery has been strangely off-key today and they are all easily dealt with by the hosts' backline.
60' INTO THE FINAL 30
Just half an hour remains at Turf Moor now and this game is still very much up for grabs. The away side look the more likely at present but this one has got 0-0 written all over it by the looks of things.
58' WELL ORGANISED
It is easy to say that Tottenham haven't been at their best this afternoon, but it must be noted how well organised Sean Dyche's side have been as they have restricted one of the league's best sides to very little. The hosts are still carrying a little bit of an attacking threat on the break as well.
56' SPURS ON TOP
Burnley started the first half much the better of the two, but after a half time team talk, it is the visitors who are looking stronger in the early stages of this second period. Vincent Janssen has not done an awful lot to make his case for becoming a regular fixture up top for Spurs, however.
54' ONLY ONE SUB LEFT
Both of these sides are two of the harder working teams in the league and as we enter the final few stages of the match it will be interesting to see how they cope. Burnley still have a possibility of making three changes, while injuries means that Tottenham only have one left in their arsenal. Will that extra bit of freshness help the home side?
52' SQUEEZED OUT
A big chance for Spurs, but the hosts do really well to clear their lines. Vincent Janssen drives a powerful effort at goal from the angle and Tom Heaton spills it, with Sissoko looking to tap home, but a combination of Heaton and Ward combine to thwart the Frenchman and concede a corner.
50' DISAPPOINTING TAKE
Eriksen does indeed take the free-kick, but it ends up summing his side's performance up so far in a nutshell - disappointng as it cannons into the middle of the wall.
48' DANGEROUS AREA
Nervy moments again for Tom Heaton as Michael Keane gives away a foul, 25 yards from goal, just left of centre. Christian Eriksen will definitely take this one.
46' BACK IN ACTION
Burnley get the second half started at Turf Moor, with neither side electing to make a change at the break.
45' BURNLEY 0-0 TOTTENHAM
There has been about as much incident in this first half as the scoreline suggests. Very little to get excited about at Turf Moor so far as both Burnley and Tottenham have failed to create any real chances of note, with one glaring Dele Alli miss the only exception. The hosts started the better of the two and did have the better of things for the duration of that first period, but aside from a couple of decent crosses from Matthew Lowton, they struggled to create anything. As poor as Spurs have been, meanwhile, they forced easily the best opportunity so far as Dele Alli blazed over an open goal from eight yards after Tom Heaton could only parry Christian Eriksen's shot into his path. Worrying signs for Mauricio Pochettino as Victor Wanyama and far more seriously Harry Winks, had to be replaced, with the latter taken off on a stretcher and they will have to significantly imrpove after the break if they are to keep any faint hopes of winning the title alive.
45' NO GOALS AT THE BREAK
A very uneventful first half comes to an end at Turf Moor, with no goals as we go into the interval.
45' LATE SUB
Another injury late on in this first period, with Harry Winks unable to continue - Moussa Sissoko is the man to come on in his place.
45' TWO ADDED MINUTES
There will be two minutes added on at the end of this first half.
45' DEMBELE COMES ON
As we enter the final minute of this first half, Mousa Dembele comes on to replace the stricken Victor Wanyama for Tottenham.
43' WANYAMA WILL COME OFF
The sopa opera that is this back injury to Victor Wanyama is about to come to an end as the midfielder is down on the turf again and this time he is taking his shinpads and socks off and gesturing that he is ready to be replaced.
41' SMART DEFENDING
More joy down the right for the Clarets as Lowton once more delivers a deep cross that Arfield acrobatically steers back across goal, but just as Gray is about to pounce, Eric Dier comes across to clear the danger. Burnley have edged this first half for my money.
39' WANYAMA HOBBLES OFF
The Victor Wanyama injury sceanrio is more interesting than the game at the moment - he has hobbled off for some more treatment now and whether he comes out for the second half is highly doubtful. I earlier described him as being right as rain - lucky I'm a football reporter and not a doctor.
37' WANYAMA WILL CARRY ON
Victor Wanyama is back on the pitch now and the Spurs players looks right as rain and will continue for the away side. Just under ten minutes left in this first period and there hasn't been too much to write home about so far.
35' WANYAMA IN TROUBLE
A nasty one for Victor Wanyama here as the Kenya international is in a heap in the centre circle following a clash of heads with Ashley Barnes in the middle of the park. The midfielder needs some treatment, but he should be fine to continue.
33' HOW HAS HE MISSED?
Tottenham should be a goal up, but Dele Alli has missed a real sitter. Eriksen takes a shot from the angle of the area that can only be parried by Heaton, but Alli blazes over an empty net from eight yards under pressure from the sliding Ben Mee. A head in hands moment.
31' DANGEROUS FROM CROSSES
Another decent delivery from Lowton from the right-hand side and Barnes sees his header blocked behind at the back post. There looks to be some joy for Burnley from crosses this afternoon.
29' JUST OFFSIDE
More good football from the Clarets as a dinked ball over the top from Barton finds Gray, whose low strike is well stopped by Hugo Lloris, but the striker was slightly offside anyway. Easy day for the keepers so far.
27' SHOT SQUEEZED OUT
Good stuff from the hosts as they engineer a flowing, passing move down the left before working it into the area, but Ashley Barnes sees his eventual shot blocked by a sea of white shirts.
25' ALL SPURS
Just in the last five minutes or so, this game has been completely dominated by the away outfit as they win the ball back off their opponents at will, with Burnley now allowing them to press from the back, as opposed to the pressing tactic they were utilising so well early doors. Sean Dyche will be eager for his men to up the ante here.
23' NEED A WIN
A point for any team at Turf Moor this season will be seen as a point gained, but this afternoon you sense that anything less than a win will be seen as a failure for Tottenham. With Chelsea currently losing at home to Crystal Palace, Spurs will be desperate to try and put some pressure on the league leaders.
21' COMING BACK INTO IT
Just a few signs in the last few minutes that Spurs are starting to find their feet as the match becomes more evenly contested now, but it is all a bit scrappy at Turf Moor, with little to get the neutral too excited to be honest.
19' FIERCE EFFORT
A surprise attempt from the set piece as Eriksen stands over the ball, but Toby Alderweireld sprints out of nowhere to hammer a shot goalwards with a lot of swerve on it, but Tom Heaton is always behind it.
17' DANGEROUS POSITION
Christian Eriksen will be sizing this one up. Dele Alli is fouled 30 yards from goal, right in the centre of the pitch. Tom Heaton will be a very nervous man at the moment.
15' DOMINATING THE BALL, BUT NOTHING ELSE
The early statistics show that Mauricio Pochettino's men have had 70% of the ball so far, but they have done precious little with it and it is definitely Burnley who have looked the better team thus far. Chances at a premium at Turf Moor at the moment, though.
13' BACK TO HOME COMFORTS
Burnley come into this game on the back of four successive fixtures on the road and it very much looks as though they are enjoying the luxury of home comforts once more. The Turf Moor crowd is bouncing and the players are responding, with Joey Barton and Jeff Hendrick helping their team to win the midfield battle so far.
11' BLOCKED SHOT
This is more like it from the visitors as they win a turnover in the centre circle and suddenly there is a break on, with Christian Eriksen sprinting into opposition territory. The Dane evades a couple of challenges on the edge of the area, but his shot is crowded out from 18 yards.
9' SPURS YET TO GET GOING
We are ten minutes into this contest and title-challengers Tottenham are yet to get going in this one, with the Clarets still on top with their combative, direct gameplan working a treat so far.
7' HALF CHANCE
No messing about from Burnley as they go route on with Matthew Lowton floating an early, deep cross in towards the back post, where Ashley Barnes is charging in. The attacker meets it well, but his effort is straight at Hugo Lloris.
5' POSITIVE START
There is a big gap between these two teams in terms of points, finances and quality of players, but as they always do at their home ground, it is Burnley who have started on the front foot today. No chances to speak of as of yet, but the hosts are looking sharp.
3' LUCKY TO AVOID A BOOKING
Vincent Janssen is making a rare and surprising start for Tottenham this afternoon and he is clearly eager to impress, but a little overzealous here. The Duthcman flies into an unnecessary challenge on George Boyd, very late, and is perhaps fortunate to avoid an early booking.
1' KICK OFF
Here we go then - Tottenham get us up and running at Turf Moor.
0' KICK OFF ON THE WAY
So, kick-off from Turf Moor is about ten minutes away now and you can join us right here in just a couple of moments for live text commentary of this Barclays Premier League clash.
0' FULL TEAMS
Burnley: Heaton, Lowton, Keane, Mee, Ward, Boyd, Hendrick, Barton, Arfield, Gray, Barnes. Subs: Brady, Defour, Tarkowski, Westwood, Vokes, Flanagan, Robinson. Tottenham: Lloris, Dier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Trippier, Wanyama, Winks, Davies, Eriksen, Alli, Janssen. Subs: Walker, Son Heung-Min, Kevin Nkoudou, Dembele, Carter-Vickers, Vorm, Sissoko.
0' SPURS SITTING PRETTY
While the title looks a step too far once more for Tottenham, it is still accurate to say that they have had a very prosperous season under the tutelage of the highly sought after managerial talents of Mauricio Pochettino. The North London side currently occupy second place in the table and while the ten-point gap to leaders Chelsea looks insurmountable, the fact that they are above the likes of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United and last but not least bitter rivals Arsenal, speaks volumes about what a good year they are having. Spurs are coming into this match in all sorts of form, but they face sturdy opposition in the form of Burnley at a ground where they seldom lose and with no Harry Kane to count on, today’s visitors will have a real job on their hands escaping with a full share of the spoils. It would take a brave man to bet against Pochettino’s brigade the way they are playing, however.
0' FORTRESS TURF MOOR
Normally for a newly promoted side the visit of the second-placed team in the Premier League is cause for concern, but such has been Burnley’s form at Turf Moor this season that the Clarets will be embracing the prospect of taking on Tottenham in front of their vociferous home fans. Sean Dyche’s men have claimed all but three of their 32 points on their own turf, with three draws on their travels as good as it gets as far as their away record is concerned. With the final stages of the campaign upon us, it is fair to say that most Burnley fans would have been delighted to have been eight points clear of the bottom three at this point, regardless of their dreadful form on their travels. It is a case of home comforts again this afternoon, though, and Dyche’s side will be hoping to add Spurs to their ever-growing list of scalps they have claimed in 2016-17 at fortress Turf Moor.
