Wayne Rooney scored in his Premier League return to Everton, helping them earn a 1-0 victory over Stoke on Saturday afternoon.

As season openers go, Ronald Koeman can't have too many complaints. His side were disciplined, creative and composed, overcoming a lacklustre Stoke side in comfortable fashion.

The Toffees dominated both halves, and the Goodison faithful were left hopeful as returnee Rooney and youngster Dominic Calvert-Lewin shone as individuals, and, more promisingly, together.

It was Rooney who scored the only goal of the contest, deep into the first half. He initiated the move with a neat one-two in the centre of the park, before rushing into the area to convert Calvert-Lewin's cross.

Mark Hughes will have some positives to take from the game. His side were solid at the back throughout and withstood significant pressure. In attack, not so impressive, Everton allowed to coast to a comfortable win at Goodison Park.
